The verbal category of voice shows the direction of the process as regards the participants of the situation reflected in the syntactic construction. The voice of the English verb is expressed by the opposition of the passive form of the verb to the active form of the verb. The passive form as the strong member of the opposition expresses reception of the action by the subject of the syntactic construction (i.e. the "passive" subject, denoting the object of the action); the active form as the weak member of the opposition leaves this meaning unspecified, i.e. it expresses "non-passivity".
Voice is a topic of perennial linguistic interest. Grammarians have approached the topic from different perspectives and have tried to establish means of describing the range of voice structures and functions. The object of this paper is to contribute to the perpetual discussion by looking at the passive voice including the description of causative constructions in English and to focus on particular functions of passive voice and causative forms of the English language observing the consistency and status of them. The main objectives are to reveal how the active and passive voices are related with and what are the differences between these two forms.
Many grammarians state that one should use the active voice whenever he can instead of the passive. The methods used in this paper compare the cases of passive voice in scientific writing and works of fiction. The results show how many passive voice constructions are encountered in two totally different types of writing. The functions of voice systems are introduced and described. The data are then presented, analysed and discussed with respect to the relevant theoretic grounds. Numerous discrepancies between the two forms: active and passive are also analyzed.
It should be noted that as the passive is a very broad topic and various studies have discussed it so far, this paper makes an attempt to compare and analyze all related issues. The main sources used were a book ''A course of theoretical English grammar'' by Blokh, ''English grammar'' by B.S. Azar, '' An Introductory Course in Theoretical English Grammar'' by L. Valeika and J. Buitkienė and many others.
